We could hear them yelping, but they didn’t come out. The days ran together. And then they started to emerge. One day, I spotted movement out of the corner of my eye: one by one, five wolf pups followed their mother right in front of our blind. The mother looked across the stream. It felt like she was looking right into my eyes. She stared, as if to make sure I knew that she was looking at me, and then she left. The next 20 minutes were truly magical. The five pups stayed in the creek, playing and chasing each other in the dying light of day.
