Executed in 1960, Lee Krasner’s ‘The Eye is the First Circle’ is a defining example of her ‘Umber’ paintings. Reeling from a period of great personal loss - including the deaths of her mother and of her husband, Jackson Pollock - Krasner harnessed her emotional turmoil to plunge into a new series of works that she painted during the night, consequently referring to the resulting ‘Umber’ paintings as the ‘Night Journeys’. The title of the present work came to Krasner as she was struck by the half-lidded eyes that seemed to peer out from the dense thicket of pigment. ‘The Eye is the First Circle’ will highlight our Contemporary Art Evening auction this May, after 20+ years in the same distinguished private collection.
