Happy Birthday to J.M.W. #Turner who was born #OTD in 1775. Britain’s favourite artist, Turner is one of the preeminent figures that mark the pages of history. Perpetually engaged with the art of both his predecessors and contemporaries, he was at the same time possibly the first ‘modern’ painter; who directly inspired the Impressionism of the nineteenth century, and presaged the Abstract Expressionism of the twentieth century.
This painting is one of an important group of works created by Turner in the last ten years of his life. Essentially explorations of the effects of light, these visionary, experimental late works were painted by the artist for himself, rather than for exhibition or for sale, and retained for the development of his art.
Unveiled today as part of our travelling exhibition in #Moscow, Landscape with Walton Bridges will be one of the highlights of our Old Master Evening sale in London this July.
