Statistics show us as target number one for these monster storms which originate in Africa before rolling into the Caribbean and then can veer up sweeping the entire eastern seaboard. Those of us who have chosen this barrier island, this sandbar, as home know we are taking our chances. These barrier islands are supposed to move with or without hurricanes or rising sea levels. My good neighbors Billy and Sandra Stinson were photographed by me for a NatGeo article on the outer banks. Ironically a summer storm cloud loomed in this published NatGeo Magazine picture, yet none of us could imagine that just a few months later hurricane Irene would take away the Stinson summer home. Because I was already friends of the family from shooting and also a neighbor who had ridden out the storm, I was able to take the second image of the family grieving on the only piece of the house left after the soundside tidal wave took the house. Yet people want privacy in these moments. Diplomacy is a major part of people shooting. So I waded out in waist high water with a normal street camera moving very very slowly as not to disturb and hoping I did not step in a hole or trip or get hit by floating debris all of which were possible. Billy saw me out of the corner of his eye. If I had been any other news gatherer he would have been upset. Yet I knew I had to get this shot as part of the history of the outer banks and of course the Stinsons knew it too. Relationships matter.
