Snow-white: The stark monochrome austerity of Kusama Yayoi’s ‘Interminable Net #4’ from 1959 glows bright with a pristine white-ness that optically hums before our eyes. Having been kept in a private collection for decades, the painting is an extremely rare example from the most radical, transformative and accomplished period of Kusama’s career.
_
When Kusama first arrived in New York City in June 1958, she recalls climbing to the top of the Empire State Building and looking down at the latticed city below in complete awe. At 29 years old, the young artist realised that to succeed in the city she would have to do something spectacular. Shortly after, she began work on what would become her most renowned series of white Infinity Net canvases.
_
Over the next four years, Kusama gained serious critical recognition across America and Europe, and radically challenged the Abstract Expressionists with the dynamic intimacy, control, and meditative contemplation of her Infinity Nets series.
