Painted just two years before Jean-Michel Basquiat’s untimely death, ‘Apex’ contends with some of the most potent and fundamental themes addressed throughout the artist’s oeuvre. Adorned with a cacophony of images, symbols and cyphers, the canvas tells the tale of 1980s downtown #NewYork, brimming as it was with museums and street art, consumerism and deprivation, graffiti and dance, hip-hop and improvised Jazz. The two most prominent symbols pose questions of identity, existentialism, life and death; the figure to the left is Basquiat himself, and the skull to the right is endowed with the features of both a traditional African mask and a medical x-ray – medicine being one of Basquiat’s lifelong interests.
