In a sticky, humid valley speckled with palm trees and dusty yellow roads on Feb. 23, thousands of Venezuelans prepared to join caravans hauling tons of aid destined for their counterparts on the other side of #Colombia's border with Venezuela. This was the set of the opposition’s challenge to President Nicolás Maduro, who has called the aid operation a "show" and described the caravans as a trojan horse loaded with “contaminated” food. “We’re tired of this Maduro staying in power,” said Yesica, 27, an aid activist from Barquisimeto, west of Caracas, as a fellow marcher piled rocks into the remains of a beat-up suitcase and dragged it toward the center of the Simón Bolívar International Bridge. There, at another site of an attempted aid crossing, others slung bricks and buried their faces in rags to fend off tear gas canisters returned by Venezuelan authorities. “We don’t want any more dictatorship,” said William Leal, 35, from neighboring Táchira state in #Venezuela. “We don’t have anything. We’re dying from hunger.” In these photographs: a girl covers her mouth from the tear gas; a demonstrator prepares to throw a rock; another attempts for a better view. Read more at the link in bio.
