The Monlam Chenmo, meaning Great Prayer Festival, begins on the 4th day of the Tibetan New Year, and lasts for 2 weeks. During the Monlam Festival, Buddhists pray, rejoice, make offerings to and commemorate the miracles Buddha performed. In Labrang Monastery the festivities included costumed dancing often about moral instruction, Buddhist values, and ancient Tibetan legends, and by just witnessing them, the audience is said to gain merit on the road to enlightenment.
