Introducing another of Fukushima’s weird and wonderful festivals: Iizaka Onsen’s Usokae Festival. This festival happens in mid-January each year and as Japanese festivals go, it’s pretty young. This festival’s only been around for around 20 years, but has become very popular throughout the prefecture during this time. At this festival people buy wooden “Usokae” birds, hand-crafted in the town. You are meant to buy one of these birds while thinking about a lie that you hope becomes true by the end of the year. Over the course of the year, the bird with change (kae) your lie (uso) into being true. Kind of confusing. But say you wanted to pass an exam by the end of the year, when you buy your Usokae bird, you’d think to yourself “By the end of 2019, I still won’t have passed my exam”, and the bird will make sure this doesn’t happen! At the next Usokae Festival, you bring your bird back to the shrine you bought it at and replace it with a new one!
