Happy #Caturday ? This exceptional ‘Standing Tiger’ from the important American folk art collection of David Teiger is regarded as the best of its kind. Arguably Augustus “Gus” Wilson’s masterpiece, this striking wooden figure is the largest of three standing tigers that the woodcarver was inspired to create after seeing newspaper photos of Emyr, a massive tiger brought to Portland, Maine by the Ringling Brothers Circus in 1931. The work is the last of the three examples remaining in private hands, with the other two residing in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Now on view in our York Avenue galleries, this commanding cat will highlight our dedicated sale of American folk art from Teiger’s collection on 20 January in #NYC, with proceeds benefitting Teiger Foundation for the support of contemporary art. ?#SothebysAmericana #catsofinstagram #tiger
