Trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Alma-Tadema was famed for his luxurious depictions of the classical Roman Empire. ‘Past and Present Generations’ shows a young couple on a sunlit terrace, amidst a a compelling, albeit imaginative, balustrade of Roman busts on herm pillars, based on precise drawings Alma-Tadema made in the @UffiziGalleries in Florence and the #CapitolineMuseum in Rome. The title may refer to the couples’ connection to their Roman ancestors, but could also be a metaphor for the artist’s connection to the antique subjects which he so cherished.
