For centuries, women in many conservative parts of West Africa have been expected to endure bad marriages. But here in #Niger, an increasing number are pushing for divorce, frustrated not only by their husbands’ inability to earn a living during a time of economic hardship, but also because their views on relationships have changed. They want to choose whom and when to marry, not be pushed into marriages like so many generations of women before them. The Islamic judge who presides over the street-side religious court in Maradi, Niger’s third-largest city, said that divorces initiated by women had doubled in the past 3 years, with nearly 50 women a month coming to end their marriages. @lauraboushnak took this photo of Saaida Halidou, 27, explaining to the judge the reasons behind her wish to divorce. Dionne Searcey, the West Africa bureau chief for #nytimes, visited Niger to learn more about girls whose parents had forced them into marriage. Her reporting taught her that women were taking control of their relationships across the region. “Niger is still lagging when it comes to quality of life for women, but I was happy to find a bit of brightness there for some young women who were part of a quiet new resistance.” Visit the link in our profile to read more, including Dionne’s reflection on her reporting.
