“I found that there was a whole #medieval alternative to the modern world.” During the week, these warriors lead conventional modern lives. But on weekends, they dress in pre-1600s outfits and enjoy a recreated bygone world. The individuals are members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a worldwide organization whose members share an affinity for the Middle Ages. Members take on a medieval name and identity as a position in courtly life. Many of them develop specialties in medieval arts, cooking, culture and other disciplines, while fighters pursue knighthood and take part in armored battle. Within the group, “there’s a sense of community that is lacking in society today,” said Brian Van Ostenbridge, a member who reigns over an area called the East Kingdom, which encompasses the Northeast U.S. and parts of Canada. @juliagillard77 shot these photos of SCA members in Sparta Township, New Jersey.
