Fidel Castro’s first visit to New York in April of 1959, 4 months after the overthrow of the authoritarian Fulgencio Batista, was managed by a public relations firm that had him cuddling babies, licking an ice cream cone and feeding peanuts to elephants at the @bronxzoo. He even posed with a group of schoolchildren sporting fake beards. He was still something of a mystery man, coy about his ideology and allegiances, a voluble populist in fatigues. He encountered mostly adoring crowds and bedazzled press coverage. When he visited 36 years later, there were few illusions about El Comandante. Former #nytimes executive editor Bill Keller was his designated greeter when he visited the newspaper in 1995, describing him as “a relic of a discredited creed.” He had been the target of punishing sanctions and assassination plots but yet, was still a celebrity. Robert Walker took this photo of #Fidel at the offices of La Prensa, a Spanish-language newspaper, on April 22, 1959. Fidel is pictured with Gladys Feijoo, who had won the paper's beauty contest.
