The first non-Native Americans to see the Grand Canyon were Spanish Captain García López de Cárdenas and his soldiers, led to the south rim by Hopi guides in 1540. The men were searching for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold, which during the 16th century were rumored to exist in this region. What they found was a landscape so vast that is was impossible to reckon with its scale.
