The World at Night project
Last year I wrote an online article for @ナショナルジオグラフィック on “World’s Best Stargazing Sites”. On this personal list Atacama Desert in Chile is at top, having some of the most pristine night skies on the planet. Away from light pollution, dry and clear, and transparent sky thanks to high altitude.
On this April 2016 night I was near the town of San Pedro de Atacama, on assignment for European Southern Observatory. This forest of giant cactus at 3500 meters was peacefully resting under an ocean of stars. The Southern Cross is near the center and Magellanic Clouds, our neighboring galaxies, are on the right, with the south celestial pole right above the large close cactus, in an “empty” area of the sky, unmarked by any polar star.
