In the midst of the festive season in London, tonight’s Old Masters Evening sale was led by a remarkable oil sketch by Dutch master Rembrandt, envisaging Jesus Christ with his hands clasped in prayer. Dated to circa 1655, ‘Study of the Head of a Young Man’ achieved £9.5 million in its first appearance on the market in 60 years, having hung, until recently, in the artist’s house in Amsterdam. Buried in the original layer of paint are two remarkably preserved fingerprints – presumed to be the only surviving fingerprints of the artist himself. Hammered down by auctioneer Harry Dalmeny, tonight’s sale totalled £30.2 million – head to our Story for highlights from the evening.
