Ferdinando Tacca’s ‘Apollo and Daphne’ is a masterpiece of movement and technical virtuosity which has been admired for centuries. The bronze represents one of the greatest tales of classical antiquity, and combines the two contrasting emotions of love and hate. The god Apollo is chasing the woodland nymph Daphne after Cupid shoots him with an arrow of love, but mischievously Cupid struck an arrow of hatred at Daphne, who prays to her father, a river god, to save her so he turns Daphne into a laurel tree.

Tacca was one of the leading sculptors in Florence in the late Baroque period and what he does which is different to many other sculptors before him is to create these double figure groups which are full of movement, essentially narratives very much informed by contemporary theatre.

This previously unrecorded version of one of Tacca’s rarest models is on view in our #London galleries this weekend, ahead of our Old Master Sculpture & Works of Art sale on 4 December. #SothebysOldMasters
