This portrait of Leo #Tolstoy, the Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time, is one of several studies by realist painter Ilya Efimovich Repin made of the writer over the course of their long-lasting friendship. The two met in October 1880 when Tolstoy wandered into Repin’s studio in Moscow. Repin was thrilled to meet the prolific author in person and found him to be a fascinating subject, later writing of him: ‘as far as I can see, after his face, all other faces seem boring and lacking in curiosity’. Their friendship flourished and lasted more than 30 years, with Repin painting this work six years after the author’s death in 1916. #SothebysRussian
