Painted in the early to mid-19th century, ‘St Patrick’s Hall, Dublin Castle’ shows elegantly dressed men and women gathered in circular groups across the Ballroom floor in anticipation of a dance, while those not involved can be seen lining either side of the Hall’s walls. The 1840s would seem to have been an indulgent period for the easing of the official restrictions on dress styles and hair ornaments: here, some unmarried ladies signal their position through wearing only fresh flowers and jewellery in the hair. Regulation on the court dress worn by gentlemen was strict on the fabric and style of the suit but allowed expression in a fancy waistcoat.
