A masterpiece from the pinnacle of Oskar Kokoschka’s early portraiture, ‘Joseph de Montesquiou-Fezensac’ from 1910 is a harbinger of Expressionism. The present work was painted during Kokoschka’s visit to the Mont Blanc sanatorium in Leysin in the Swiss Alps, where he met Joseph de Montesquiou-Fezensac, a patient who would go on to become the Duke of Fezensac in 1913. Referred to the artist as a “soul painting”, the work shows Kokoschka breaking convention in almost every aspect, with his primary aim to bring the invisible inside of the person to the surface. This captivating oil is one of two masterworks voluntarily restituted to the heirs of art-world luminary Alfred Flechtheim, now on view in our York Avenue headquarters.
