More than 6 million people have lost the right to vote in the U.S. because of their criminal records. Desmond Meade, the president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, wants to change that. He’s been working for years to restore voting rights to people who had committed felonies, as he had. A Florida ballot initiative, Amendment 4, would automatically restore the right to vote to people with a felony conviction who have completed their sentences. (The initiative makes 2 exceptions: no voting rights for people convicted of murder or sex offenses.) Florida is home to 1.5 million felons — more than any other state. Amendment 4 could enfranchise more people at once than any initiative since women’s suffrage. “I did my crime. I paid my time. Now let me move on. Say yes to second chances,” Desmond said. @nataliekeyssar took this portrait of Desmond. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
