Though the #NewYorkCityMarathon isn’t a holiday, it unifies the city as much as — if not more than — many of our official ones. To experience marathon day in New York is to see what a big-city race is capable of generating — joy, pain, misery, triumph and nirvana. That was on full display this Sunday as 50,000 runners took part in the annual 26.2 mile course. They were joined by 12,000 volunteers and hundreds of thousands of cheering spectators who lined the streets across the city. Some fans rang cowbells and rattled Matracas while others waved hand-written signs of encouragement and handed out high-fives and snacks. @hlswift took this photo of a cheerful runner in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
