Rabia, 7, poses in the orthopedic center in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on Aug. 26, her first day wearing a prosthetic leg. Part of her right leg was amputated months earlier after a rocket-propelled grenade was found by a group of children walking to school, then brought home and dropped. Shrapnel tore through their flesh, from toes to thighs. Five of them, including Rabia, lost portions of a leg, and two lost most of both. She was one of two girls among the survivors, all members of an extended family. By August, five of the seven had been fitted with new legs. Each came with a new pair of sneakers. Asked if she could stand without crutches, Rabia let them fall to the ground. See the full photo essay at TIME.com/afghan-family. Photograph by @andrewquilty for TIME
