Executed in 1912 at the brink of World War I, Ludwig Meidner’s ‘Apokalyptische Landschaft’ is a cataclysmic and arresting urban scene that reflects the social, political, emotional and artistic upheaval in Germany at the time. One of few ‘Apocalyptic Landscapes’ by the Expressionist artist remaining in private hands, the striking image showcases Meidner’s tremendous visionary powers, his anticipation of the destruction of Europe and the recurrent conflict that was to blemish the future course of the 20th century.
