Photos by @michaelmelford- 50 years ago today President Lyndon Johnson signed into law the Wild and Scenic River Act to protect designated rivers and their unique characteristics so that they could be preserved in their free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. Eight rivers were included in the original act. As of August 2018, the National System protects over 12,700 miles of 209 rivers in 40 states and Puerto Rico.

On August 2nd 2018, 20 miles of East Rosebud Creek in Montana were designated as a Wild and Scenic, the first Wild and Scenic designation in Montana in over 40 years.

The Wood, and Pawcatuck Rivers in Rhode Island and Connecticut where I live are proposed for possible additions to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System! Hope so! #rivers #wilderness #conservation #nature @ナショナルジオグラフィック
