In a court case which became the most celebrated obscenity trial in British literary history, Penguin Books were prosecuted for publishing the uncensored text of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ by D.H. Lawrence. The Chatterley trial, which found in favour of Penguin, heralded the transformation of the 1960s and ushered in a more liberal and permissive Britain.

This autumn in #London, the very book that the judge carried into court, annotated for him by his wife, will come under the hammer. The paperback is housed in a silk damask bag made by the judge’s wife, so that her husband would not be seen carrying the novel in public.
The sale comes some 25 years after it was acquired by Christopher Cone as a present for his partner, the late Stanley J. Seeger. This important historic document forms part of a sale of property from their country home, an auction packed with delights as diverse as a Fabergé copper cooking pot from 1914, Marilyn Monroe’s picnic basket and Picasso’s cigarette holder. #SothebysBooks #LadyChatterleysLover
