Walking the grounds at #Afropunk, you’ll come across countless groups of friends with some truly over-the-top, DIY looks, but Mila Koren (@milakoren) and her pals stand out more than most. Koren dons a bright orange rope harness that she made herself the night before thanks to a YouTube tutorial, and her friends—Janae Sumter (@hey_jaee), Marcus Bryant (@kissmyspaz), and VanDawn Williams (@soho_vann)—bring similarly vibrant looks, including everything from towering baby pink Buffalo platforms to a traditional bright yellow pantsuit set. Sumter met Bryant and Williams for the first time at Afropunk two years ago, and the friends say that they like to take things further each year while staying in the realm of their personal style. “This outfit is me, 24/7, every day of the week,” says Bryant. “There’s no turning it off—it’s not a costume.
