Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Gannet pair – At times these majestic birds can appear as the epitome of grace, poise and elegance and those like me that have been privileged to spend time in their company can attest to this fact. At other times however they can be spectacularly aggressive, surly, confrontational and clumsy, routinely attacking each other and one another’s chicks for little more than a wing tip out of place. Astonishingly territorial these patterns of behaviour have been established over the millennia and whilst other seabird colonies around the UK, and species such as puffins, razorbills and guillemots suffer devastating declines the gannets ability to fly up to four hundred miles on fishing trips, thereby accessing a wider range of fish stocks, has allowed it to expand in most of its range. Whatever they are doing seems at least for now to be working though no doubt some fishing lobby will soon doubtless want to cull them at some point, predictably for the heinous crime of eating fish. Similar absurd calls were made when the globally threatened population of greys seals dared to expand their numbers in UK waters, stories of seals hunting in wolf-like packs were peddled to our always cretinous press in some pathetic attempt to garner support for yet another unjustified slaughter. For now however their biggest threat does indeed remain the fisherman but more because of their carelessness and profligacy, the cause of millions of tons of discarded fishing nets that lie strewn throughout our network of oceans, the cause of death for countless millions of seabirds, every one of beautiful and important as these, every single year.
