Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mallard drying its wings – This image, I hope, again re-emphasises the importance of picking a subject, or a location that is local to you and then working it over time. This beautiful bird is the humble mallard, one of the UK’s most familiar birds and yet, because of its seeming familiarity, the frequentness with which it is seen it is so often overlooked by other photographers. It is bewilderingly seen as dull, boring and I can only imagine just how many photographers out there who have in their collection countless images of much less common, but arguably more spectacular birds such as ospreys or kingfishers, having absolutely zero images of these birds. Why, no idea? For me it is the final image in which I am most interested as my desire photographically has always been to reveal to people the e beauty and the value of all of our wildlife, rare or common, to marvel in our spectacular natural history and then hopefully instil in them a desire to protect, or at the very least respect and admire it. Mallard’s are by no means a protected species, nor are they currently under threat but they are still an iconic UK species, they are remarkably beautiful and I see always the value in their lives. In this image I’ve used backlighting to reveal the water droplets cascading off its drying wings, the 1000/sec shutter speed allowing the smallest movement in the wings and in the fastest moving water droplets but keeping the head and the eye sharp. By exposing primarily for the golden water droplets there is a patch of burnt out water on the surface where all detail is lost but such compromises are often necessary and I remain happy with how the image came out.
