Nevada’s Black Rock Desert photo by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) |
Sun drenched and rain starved the playa of the Black Rock Desert is a vast, cracked mud flat that extends nearly 100 miles from the town of Empire north toward the Oregon border. Home to the fabled Burning Man festival, the playa is one remnant of the gargantuan Pleistocene Lake Lahontan. At its peak 22,000 years ago, Lake Lahontan occupied much of modern day Nevada. The lake had a surface area of over 8,500 square miles. It was almost an inland sea. 22,000 years ago, water here at the Black Rock desert would have been 500 feet deep. #blackrockdesert #Lahontan
