Photo by @anniegriffithsphotography. Water in the desert is precious and necessary for migrating species that rely on riparian habitat to survive. These butterflies pause for a drink along the San Pedro River in Arizona.

#PhotographyForGood, this photo is from the series of images I shot for a National Geographic (@ナショナルジオグラフィック) book and traveling exhibit called “Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands,” authored by @barbarakingsolver. Our goal was to celebrate the last 1% of wilderness remaining in the United States, and urge its protection.

The image was shot on black and white infrared film. I then hand tinted the resulting prints. My goal was to use this romantic technique to give the images a sense of timelessness. The work raised more than a quarter million dollars for grassroots conservation efforts.
