Kuala Lumpur wants to be known as one of the world’s great cities. Exchange 106 tower is meant to help make that statement. The 4-million-square-foot skyscraper is the centerpiece of an office, retail and residential development sponsored by former Prime Minister Najib Razak to turn part of the city’s central business district into a new global finance center. Among the world’s 15 tallest buildings, Exchange 106 stands 133 feet higher than the Petronas Twin Towers, which have been landmarks on the #KualaLumpur skyline since 1998. But its significance has been overshadowed by charges of government corruption, embezzlement and money laundering. Still, both the tower and the larger exchange are hives of active construction. The big tower — which follows a master plan that stresses energy efficiency, environmental sensitivity and access — fills a dire shortage in top-tier office space in Kuala Lumpur. It includes 100,000 square feet of retail space on 2 lower floors, a lobby on the 57th floor for sightseeing and 92 floors of office space.
