Welcome to the world of quarter-midget racing, where kids as young as 5 compete on short racetracks all across the U.S. Their cars, called quarter midgets, are specifically designed for children. Speeds can reach more than 40 miles per hour. And while safety regulations are stringent, accidents are inevitable. Most quarter-midget racers try their hand at racing and proceed no further. Others graduate to larger cars and larger tracks. And a select few will aim for the sport’s highest levels, including @nascar and @indycar. But most kids are simply drawn to the thrill of racing — and to the quality of the community. Mekenzie VanArsdale, who’s 17, calls it her “race family.” “You race hard, you rub tires, sometimes you bust up someone’s car — but as soon as you’re off the track, you’re best friends again,” she told @sahiltner.
