Walker Stapleton, a candidate for #Colorado governor, has touted a distinguished biography. But there’s one aspect of his family’s past that he has largely avoided mentioning: His great-grandfather, Benjamin Stapleton, a 5-time mayor of Denver, was a powerful member of the Ku Klux Klan. Now #WalkerStapleton finds himself in the difficult position of attempting to lead voters into the future just as the state grapples with his family’s past. The debate: whether to rebrand institutions that have come to bear the Stapleton name. Last school year, students at Denver School of Science and Technology Stapleton wrote persuasive essays for or against a name change. Brooklyn Luckett, who’ll be in the 8th grade there in the fall, was so alarmed by the news that her school was named for a Klan member that she spent a day in the counselor’s office. She later emerged as one of the fiercest advocates for a name change, telling administrators that the school shouldn’t be “admiring a man who didn’t do what was right.” @nickcotephoto took this portrait of Brooklyn.
