Lebanon’s ancient cedars have outlived empires and survived modern wars. Many Lebanese see these trees as a reflection of their country’s resilience. #Cedars are unusual: they can grow on rugged stone. At one point, they covered Lebanon’s highlands. Now, they’re moving up the mountains to even higher altitudes, chasing the cold winters they need to reproduce. But in some places, there isn’t much farther up to go. #Globalwarming could destroy these trees. “Climate change is a fact here,” said Nizar Hani, director of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, south of Beirut. “We are in a race,” he said. “There is no time to lose.” Some of Lebanon’s oldest cedars have been alive for more than 1,000 years. They’re used as a symbol all over Lebanon — from the country’s flag to souvenirs, tattoos and political posters. The cedar even comes up in the Bible. In the Song of Solomon: “His countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.” Watch our Instagram Story to see more of @anne.barnard and @joshhaner’s story about #climatechange and the cedars of Lebanon.
