Guyana is a vast, watery wilderness with only 3 paved highways. There are a few dirt roads between villages that sit on stilts. Georgetown, the capital, seems forgotten by time. The power grid is so unreliable that blackouts are a regular plague in the cities, while in much of the countryside there’s no electricity at all. This is the unlikely setting for the world’s next big oil boom. In the last 3 years, though, #ExxonMobil has drilled 8 gushing discovery wells offshore. If all goes well, one of the poorest countries in South America could become one of the wealthiest. Of history is any guide, countries that discover oil often waste their opportunity. But there is cautious optimism in Guyana. “We’ve been given a second chance to get things right,” said Raphael Trotman, the natural resources minister. The first chance was independence from Britain in 1966, and that chance was blown. Can oil wealth help #Guyana overcome its history, or will the windfall that will flood government coffers merely turn the page to a new tragic chapter? @cgregoryphoto took these photos while on #nytassignment in Guyana. Here, fishermen make their way home at the end of a day at sea.
