Game, set and match: tonight in London, auctioneer @harrydalmeny served up a superb array of Old Master Paintings in an evening sale which totalled £42.6 million. The sale was led by Rubens’ timelessly powerful painting of a Venetian nobleman which, having been cherished by the artist until his death in 1640, reached £5.4 million in its first appearance on the market for over 60 years. The rare portrait was followed by a flood of fantastic results for Dutch and Flemish paintings, including for Jacob Ochtervelt’s ‘The Oyster Meal’. Looted from a bank vault during World War II the work was recently returned to the heirs of its rightful wartime owner, and tonight achieved £1.9 million.
