This miniature portrait, a highlight of our Treasured Portraits from the Collection of Ernst Holzscheiter auction in London, depicts the celebrated set painter Ignazio Degotti.

Specialising in perspective architecture and landscapes, Degotti held the coveted title of ‘Dessinateur des Decorations’ at the Paris Opéra for over 20 years. In 1805, he assisted the French artist Jacques-Louis David in his depiction of the coronation of Emperor Napoleon – a gargantuan painting measuring 10 x 6.2 m.
