This 300-year-old Mbembe female figure originally sat on the edge of an enormous slit drum, made from a hollowed-out tree trunk. These vast drums were once central to community life in the Ewayon River region of Nigeria.

‘Either end of the drum would have featured a male and female carved figure,’ explains Bruno Claessens, our European Head of African and Oceanic Art in Paris. ‘The male figure alluded to the heroism of the community’s defenders, the female figure would have been one of the village’s key ancestors and represented prosperity through offspring.’

By the beginning of the 20th century, the massive drums had fallen into disuse. ‘But the figures were deemed important enough to be preserved because they represented the ancestors and history of these groups,’ says Claessens. Today, fewer than 20 of these figures are known to exist.
