"Vivid Sydney" is an annual festival of light and music which this year celebrated its 10th anniversary. One of the new features of this year's festival is "Skylark", a vast installation of lights stretching from the top of the Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay and outer areas of Sydney Harbour. The beams of light interact to create a spectacular light show in the sky.
I had been down to shoot Vivid a couple of times already on cloudless nights with clear skies and did get some good shots. However, on the night I took this picture there were fast moving, low-level clouds and rain were predicted. I almost left early to avoid the expected downpour but noticed how amazing the Vivid light beams looked bouncing off the fast-moving clouds. The light and cloud combination lit up the sky like the Aurora Australis had arrived in Sydney and created another dimension to this already spectacular light show. I went back to Vivid a few more times last week but was unable to find the conditions that created this magical light storm again." - @drruthcollins
