Maridelis Morales Rosado (@_maridelis) photographed this year's National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York, the first since Hurricane Maria tore through #PuertoRico last September. The photographer was born in Bayamón, outside the capital, San Juan, and spent most of her life in nearby Guaynabo. Her parents and most of her family still live on the American island territory. But for the past four years that she has lived in New York, attending and photographing the annual gathering has "become my way to reconnect with my home." Writing for TIME, she says this year's parade "feels more significant than ever. It represents a celebration of coming together as a community and holding each other up through some of the toughest times we have faced." Ahead of the upcoming hurricane season that could bring more devastation to the island, "celebrating where we come from and what we have in each other is vital." See more on TIME.com.
