Rescuers recover a body among the ruins of the village of San Miguel Los Lotes, near the Guatemalan city of Escuintla, on June 4. "It’s a surreal feeling to be there, more so than in the images I make," writes photographer @daniele_volpe, who has been based in Guatemala for 11 years. Volpe is on the ground southwest of the capital, where the Volcán de Fuego erupted. "Two meters (about six and a half feet) of ash covers the village. Hot, really hot, ash. The homes became ovens because they were surrounded by the ash. The smell, it’s horrible. You can sense that you’re walking above the dead," he adds. "It’s closer to death than I felt reading Dante’s Divine Comedy." At least 99 people were killed after the #volcano's eruption, and some 200 others remain missing.
