@lenawaithe developed her love of television watching shows with her grandmother like All In The Family, The Jeffersons, Columbo and Hunter. "I found myself not just watching it blindly but really soaking in everything about it—the characters, the jokes, the laughs, the musicality of it all," Waithe tells TIME. When she was nominated in 2017 for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, she had no idea of the barrier she was breaking. "A friend Googled it and said, “I think you’re the first African-American woman to be nominated in this category,” she recalls. "And I was like, 'That can’t be true.' So we did our research. I always try to make sure I’m saying my sisters’ names: @iamwandasykes won for Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program, and @ミンディ・カリング was the first woman of color to be nominated in the comedy category. I was the first African-American woman to be nominated in that category. Once that news hit me, I thought, 'Oh, man. If I win, now it’s not just about, Oh, I get to win an Emmy—it’s about me breaking through a barrier that I didn’t even know existed." Waithe adds: "I was just really honored to be a part of a very exclusive club, and now my mission is to make sure that I’m not the only one in there for too long."
