Photograph by @Cristina Mittermeier // This alluring animal is not a crocodile, nor is it an alligator. It is a yacaré, a species of caiman found solely in South America. Merely thirty years ago the yacaré caiman appeared to be heading for oblivion; ruthlessly hunted to supply a lucrative market for crocodilian leather. Their numbers dropped at an alarming rate. A crackdown by the Brazilian government on poaching and a global ban on the trade of wild crocodilian skins eased the pressure on the dwindling yacaré population. The yacarés themselves did the rest. After a string of intense rainy seasons—ideal for breeding—caiman numbers rebounded dramatically. As many as ten million yacaré caimans are estimated to live in the wetlands of the Pantanal of Brazil today. #FollowMe at @Cristina Mittermeier to see more unique and amazing wildlife.
