Photo by @amivitale. Giraffe keeper Lekupania and two orphaned giraffes whose lives he saved at Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) in northern Kenya. The giraffes come back to Sarara, which sits on the 850,000-acre Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy and is owned by the Samburu community, every morning to check in with Lekupania. Twigs, the oldest giraffe, was found upside down and stuck in an erosion gully and immediately rescued by the community. Both giraffes have been successfully introduced back into the wild. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent, plummeting from 140,000 in the late 1990s to around 85,000 today. To learn more about incredible conservation efforts in the area, follow and come visit Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) and nearby Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). And follow @amivitale for more stories from around the world.
