Georgia O’Keeffe’s ‘Hibiscus’, a highlight of our American Art auction in New York, was completed on her trip to Hawaii in 1939. The work reflects her personal connection to botanical subjects, and underscores her passion for colour.
.
‘If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it, no one would see what I see, because I would paint it small like the flower is small,’ O’Keeffe once mused.
.
‘So I said to myself–I'll paint what I see–what the flower is to me, but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it.’
.
Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986), ‘Hibiscus’, 1939. Oil on canvas, 19 x 16 ⅛ in. (48.3 x 41 cm.). Estimate: $4,000,000–6,000,000.
