Distinguished by its towering scale and elegant monochrome palette, Christopher Wool’s ‘Untitled’ continues the themes from his ‘Gray Paintings’ series, first developed around 2000.
.
While the ‘Gray Paintings’ might look simple – recalling the rapid-dash tags of a graffiti artist on the fly – they are in fact the result of a painstaking system of process and elimination.
.
Applying black enamel with a spray gun, Wool continually reworks the painting’s surface so that countless layers of over-painting all come together to produce an effortless-looking piece.
.
Christopher Wool (b. 1955), ‘Untitled’, 2008. Enamel on linen, 106 x 96 in. (269.2 x 243.9 cm.). Estimate: $7,500,000–9,500,000.
.
To be offered in Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale – 17 May at Christie’s New York.
