In the 1990s, David Hockney returned to painting – after a decade behind the camera lens – with a series of flower paintings inspired by the death of close friends.
.
‘Antheriums’, a highlight of our Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale in May, was painted in the same year that Hockney attended a Claude Monet exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago.
.
‘When I came out of the exhibition, I started looking at the bushes on Michigan Avenue with a little more care, because Monet had looked at his surroundings with such attention,’ the artist said.
.
David Hockney (b. 1937), ‘Antheriums’, 1995. Oil on canvas, 41 ¼ x 53 ⅛ in. (104.7 x 134.9 cm.). Estimate: $2,500,000–3,500,000.
.
Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale – 17 May at Christie's New York.
