This painting by Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla shows the artist’s daughter Elena looking out to sea. Following the singular triumph of his first solo exhibition in Paris in June and July 1906, Sorolla spent the rest of the summer at Biarritz, the elegant seaside town on the Atlantic coast. Working all day on the beach, his output in the French resort was distinguished by small format paintings rather than large canvases. ‘Elena en la playa, Biarritz’ is a highlight of next week’s 19th Century European Paintings sale in #London and on view in our galleries this weekend. #Sothebys19thCentury #Spain
